Title: Pomaks in USA
Post by: Тоска on December 10, 2008, 20:32
Dear members let's talk about pomaks in Usa and their troubles, life styles and relations with other minorities who live in Usa. For example; Have they got their own associations? or Are they able to describe their ethnic and cultural backgrounds? etc... We wonder their ideas so i guess our web site reached at least 100 members from there.
Regards

Thanks for your comments but as you seen above here is english section and header of this topic's english.  Would u please use english? Because English is far more world wide in its distribution than all other spoken languages.  It is an official language in 52 countries as well as many small colonies and territories.  In addition, 1/4 to 1/3 of the people in the world understand and speak English. We need to be proactive in presenting our culture and our values to the society so that people would learn more about us.

PP: iskeceli: Are you sure? Is it a joke? Do not forget i have got authority to look-up to ips which are belong to our users. For example IP block which you just posted from s mannheim ;)

Hello there,
According to my sources, the first Pomaks left for USA after the 9th of September 1944. After the coup in Bulgaria many people with favorable positions, gained during the previous pro-fascist regime were forced to flee. Many left for Greece and Turkey and later made it to the USA. Probably there was some limited Pomak presence in USA even before that but we don't have any information in support of that claim. During the Communism in Bulgaria even greater number fled - a huge portion escaped through the Mesta River near the village of Slashten. After serving a sentence in Greece for illegal crossing of the border, the immigrants were allowed to the United States. But still the majority of Pomaks, present in USA today, left after 1990 with Green Cards.

You must have a mosque ın USA, I know this.

But we all are muslims. Dr. Zarrikoub in his book ''Histoy of the Islamic civilization" says:

"There is everywhere one beleive and one culture - the Islamic culture, whose language is the Arabic, the thought - Iranian, the wisdom - Indian, the strong - Turkish but the hearth and the soul are Islamic and human."

If these man Turkish and Arabians who invited you in their mosques are from some teroristic groups - this is an other question!

But I think that they want to help you! I hope!

Nazmika, and they stick salute to the proposals made by you to build a mosque on Pomaks and be used by all Muslims, but to be known as the Pomaks mosque , and to separate from the cemetery Pomaks but enjoys and knows a the Pomaks cemetery. I support the idea of Sema Rohleva, to making cultural information center and club of Pomaks in America, for meeting, dating, folklore, and to exchange ideas and other good initiatives. This is to hear and see that Pomaks are people a lot of good people with their customs, traditions, problems and holidays, as they have other communities. I think this may shape Pomaks as abroad and wherever situated and to help people get to know much more in this global world. The world which will exist even if all we ever will lose nothing in and will remain only our grave slabs and good deeds done by everyone! I think this is the first to announce their ideas and ads escrow account for you initiative where we can dame its modest contribution to your country and people in the name of all Pomaks in different parts of the world! So far we did more things for the celebration of all that is not bad. Let us do something for themselves Pomaks and let us know and remember well!  :)

Fatme Myuhtar-May.

Students receive Middle East study grants

Several people from ASU will travel to the Middle East this summer upon receiving a grant from the Middle East Studies Committee. Each year the committee awards grants to ASU students, faculty and staff for study and/or research in the Middle East.

This year's recipients of the grants are from various colleges and departments and have different purposes and goals for studying abroad. Nicole Jones, a sophomore journalism major, was awarded $4,812 to travel with a group from the University of Arizona to Cairo, Egypt for eight weeks. She will study reporting from the Middle East and will take a course in conversational Arabic.

"The Study Cairo program will help me embark on a journey that will begin a future filled with high expectations. I am eager and curious about this new experience," Nicole said.

Kristin Walker, a psychology major and music minor, received a grant worth $5,000 enabling her to accompany Arizona State University students/faculty members as they journey on the Summer Study Abroad Program to Jordan. In Jordan she will be taking two courses: Arabic culture and Islam, and she will also take part in an Independent Study. Kristin, who plans to pursue a Master's degree in Psychology or Music Therapy, stated "Music therapists are currently working in the West Bank in refugee camps as volunteers seek to enhance the refugees' quality of life. I believe that identifying and understanding the culture of the individuals in the Middle East is essential in the effort to aid their population sufficiently."

Fatme Myuhtar-May, a PhD Heritage Studies student, was also awarded a grant in the amount of $4,910 to travel to Bulgaria and Turkey to study and research the cultural identity of Pomaks (Bulgarian-speaking Muslims). Myuhtar-May plans to visit different communities, interview people, record songs and stories, attend social events, and visit local museum and heritage sites. The goal is to draw a comparative parallel between the life of the Pomaks in Bulgaria and Turkey. "This comparison has not been done before, and it is worth exploring for me," Myuhtar-May said.

Hello. This is mesage to pomaks people in USA. Last week too many pomaks here in USA call me  for that wath online s.Tuhovishta and Kasapov famyli spesial for that, and friends here long time togo like wath. For that  we have new friends pomaks and members www.pomak.eu (http://www.pomak.eu).  You can now enjoy online the village festival honouring the benefactor Mehmed Kasapov who lives in America since 1972. His donation for the football team and renovation of the village square  brought a lot of smiles on our children`s and grandparents` faces.
I would like to thank Erol for his work and to abc for helping with the uploading of the clips online.
It is a honour to see pomaks like Mr. Kasapov donating and helping their communities and leaving a trail for the future generations.
Enjoy the real life stories in the movies - there was happiness and tears of joy.
Over 2000 guests from Turkey (Manisa, Chanac kale), Sofia and Kazanlyk attended the festival, the organising of which has been made possibe by the donation of Mr. Kasapov. In the video you can also see a lot of the people writing in this forum: Erol, Zyulkera etc.

Elizabeth
When this project was first born, my father kept me updated through the visual effects of pictures.
Yesterday, when I came here for the first time, those pictures I've  been seeing this past year all came to life. And as I stand here today, I can't help the  but feel a gentle warmth in which those pictures just can not describe.
I look around and I see a village full of people who care about their community and the people within it. This is a quality so unique because I just don't see it very often.
Growing up, my father talked a lot about his mom, my grandmother, and yesterday I had the chance to hear many stories about her from others, how loving and special she was.
Fortunatly, because I didn't meet my grandma, this site is special to me because it gives me the opportunity to know her through the stories people told me of her while she was alive.
I wanna thanks all of you for giving me that opportunity to know her through you.
I'd like to leave with a few words that have a special meaning to me, it simply is,add the world that after stories.
"The love and the laughter will live on long after all of the sadness and the tears"    Part 2.
Част2  02 (http://www.dailymotion.com/user/boyko/video/xa5o64)                              Rebecca -  In college, a professor of mine stood before my class and read pleace after the word  poem, it was about living your dash. Simply said what matters most isn't the date we are born or the date we die, but that little dash in between the dates.
When we pass on, only those who knew us while we were alive will really know just how special that dash really is.
We are here today to celebrate and remember those dash of those who have touched our lives in a special way. Hopefully, this place will be somewhere  take out the word where many happy memories are shared.
A place where the dash of those who have gone before us remembered, and a place where we live our own dash. The significance will be felt different by each of us.
I know for me this place is what finally got me to Bulgaria to meet my family after 29 years, and for this I am greatful.
My hope, and my family's hope is that this place will be special for you too.
Thank you again for coming and I hope you all leave here today with many great memories and ready to live your dash to the fullest.

Part 5   05 (http://www.dailymotion.com/user/boyko/video/xa5oix)                                                             Last part 6

LIFESTYLE / HORIZON

WHO ARE THE POMAKS?

Centuries ago, some Balkan Christians swapped Jesus for Muhammad, a choice that still has repercussions on the peninsula

The wind of change does not blow with equal force everywhere. When you replace your old Walkman with the latest iPod, you make a small change in your standard of living. When someone who is not Spanish or Greek begins using Mañana or σιγά σιγά when talking business, this is a change in their way of thinking. However, when you change your religion, this fundamentally alters your whole life – the new religion is a new way of viewing the world.

You can easily imagine what effect such a decision may have when made by whole communities of people in a certain area. Nearly every Balkan country, from Bosnia-Herzegovina and Bulgaria to Greece and Turkey, has communities whose predecessors were baptised in the name of Jesus, but then accepted that "there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is His Prophet."

They are usually called Pomaks, but the names vary. Since the 1990s, the Muslims of Slavic origin in Bosnia and Herzegovina have officially been termed Bosniaks. In different parts of the Balkans you will also find Ahtari, Apovtsi, Babechani, Dilsazi, Marvatsi, Torbeshi and Chèchentsi (not to be confused with the people of Chechnya).

All these names refer to people who speak the same language as their Christian neighbours. If they do not wear headscarves or characteristic costumes, as in the Western Rhodope, you can hardly tell them apart from the crowds in Sarajevo or Sofia, for example. The only thing that makes them different from the rest is their religion. However, Balkan history has often proved that religion can be a matter of life or death.

(https://www.pomak.eu/board/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg132.imageshack.us%2Fimg132%2F2564%2Fpomaks3.jpg&hash=fde1abf2e5f3fdf9bc3ed00c952064a56f5829a8) (http://img132.imageshack.us/i/pomaks3.jpg/)

Nobody knows the exact number of Pomaks on the peninsula. Bosniaks are the ones with the clearest idea of their identity: they call themselves Muslim Slavs. The rest of the Pomaks live in a state of uncertainty and theories about their origin abound. Some Pomaks in Bulgaria, for instance, consider themselves to be Turks who have forgotten their mother tongue.

Others believe they are descendants of the Avars, Pechenegs or Cumans, who invaded the Balkans in the 6th, 10th and 11th centuries, leaving there pockets of Turkic genes long before the Ottomans arrived.

A third group claims that they were ancient Balkan tribes who were converted to Islam by Arab missionaries as early as the 9th Century. Some Pomaks in Greece believe they are members of a separate nation with its own language that, possibly, is descended directly from the ancient Thracians. Christian Bulgarians are certain that the Pomaks, no matter whether they live in Bulgaria, Greece or Turkey, are also Bulgarians, albeit Muslim ones.

A closer look at these theories, and the meaning of the word Pomak, shows how this confusion arose. In Bulgaria there are two main theories. The first maintains that the root of the word is pomagach, or helper, because Bulgarian Christians regarded Bulgarian Muslims as apostates, the right-hand men of the Ottomans.

The second, very different one says the root was pomachen, or tortured, because Pomaks were victims of the official Ottoman policy of Islamisation and chose to live as Muslims rather than die as martyrs. Some Greek researchers claim that Pomak is a derivative of pomax, or a drinker, a term that the ancient Hellenes applied to the wine-loving Thracians.

The most extravagant theory states that Pomak comes from polyak, or Pole. The Slavic-speaking Muslims appeared in the 17th Century, when refugees from the area of Podolia settled in the Rhodope, after their native land was conquered by the Ottomans. There, for some reason, they adopted Islam.
The need for the Pomaks to explain who they are and where they come from, the attitudes of Christians to their Pomak neighbours and the national sentiment in countries with sizeable Pomak minorities have all led to a confused and complicated situation.

The ideological battle began in the 19th Century, when the young Balkan nations fought for their self-determination. The Bulgarians had a particular problem. In their lands, there were Muslims who spoke Bulgarian, sang Bulgarian songs, told Bulgarian tales and believed in the same hobgoblins and wood nymphs.

In an age when the Ottomans were a symbol of all things retrograde, the new Bulgarian historians and journalists decided that no one could have adopted their enslaver's faith of their own free will.

They had good reason for this. Throughout the period of Ottoman rule, there had been cases of Bulgarian girls abducted for the harems of pashas and viziers. There had also been martyrs and saints, such as Sveti Georgi Novi Sofiyski, or St George of Sofia the New, who won their halos because they refused to adopt Islam.

However, this could not explain the existence of whole areas with a Muslim population who spoke Bulgarian. Then, out of the blue, several chronicles, whose originals have not been found to this day, appeared in the press. They told of the forcible mass Islamisation in the Rhodope in the 17th Century.

An account written by a priest named Metodi Draginov, from the village of Korova, also came to light. It described the conversion of the Chepinsko area to Islam in 1668. Even as far back as the late 19th Century, historians Konstantin Ireček and Professor Marin Drinov noted that Father Metodi's Bulgarian was suspiciously contemporary.

Notwithstanding this tiny detail, the annal was accepted as genuine and writer Anton Donchev used it as the main theme of his novel Time of Parting in 1964. The novel, which develops a fictional story based on a complete fake, is still studied in secondary school and was voted one of the 12 favourite books of the Bulgarians in the Big Read campaign this March, is one of the foundations on which this "knowledge" of the forcible Islamisation is based.
The novel was made into a film, Time of Violence, in 1987, a year after the so-called Revival Process, when the Communists made all Muslims, no matter whether they were Turks, Pomaks or Gypsies, change their names for Slavic ones.

This was the regime's "compelling" argument: all Muslims in the country are descendants of forcibly Islamised Bulgarians and so they must "return to their roots"– even if they did not want to.

Fraught with graphic episodes of Turkish violence against Bulgarians and paid for by the Communist Party, the film was perhaps the most blatant example of the crude propaganda engineered in the late 1980s to justify the Communists' own atrocities against the Bulgarian Turks.

You would never guess from Time of Parting that the Ottoman Empire was, in fact, one of the most religiously tolerant regimes of its age. The sultans imposed an extra tax on their non-Muslim subjects and so it was not in their interest to reduce their takings from this haraç, the main source of income for their treasury.

WHO ARE THE POMAKS? Next..

Centuries ago, some Balkan Christians swapped Jesus for Muhammad, a choice that still has repercussions on the peninsula

by Bozhidara Georgieva; photography by Anthony Georgieff

Rather, it was the lower tax rates for Muslims that persuaded the people living in the poorer areas of the empire, such as the Rhodope, to give up Christianity, especially bearing in mind that the Patriarch in Constantinople also taxed them highly. At the beginning of the Ottoman invasion, mediaeval Balkan aristocrats had another reason to embrace Muhammad. The Ottoman Empire guaranteed social prosperity only to Muslims.

Until 1703, another constant inflow of fresh Slavic blood into the Ottoman lines was due to the devşirme. Every four or five years tax collectors went around the Christian lands and forcibly took away the most handsome and intelligent boys, ignoring the wails of grief of parents and siblings.

Once converted to Islam, these boys became members of the elite Janissary corps. The most talented could climb the social ladder and a few even managed to become grand viziers.

The most famous of them was of Bosnian descent, Mehmet Pasha Sokolović (c. 1505–1579). He ordered the construction of the famous bridge over the Drina in Višegrad. In 1992 on that same bridge, the local Christian Serbs would butcher Bosniaks in one of the first large outbursts of violence of the Bosnian War.

A large number of the apostates, mainly in Bosnia, adopted Islam for a different reason. In the 11th Century, the Bogomil heresy entered their territory and won so many adherents that it became an official religion. Neither the Patriarch in Constantinople nor the Roman Pope could allow this. The persecutions that ensued substantially weakened the people's faith in the Christian institutions. So when the Ottomans arrived, the Bogomils decided that they'd be better off turning to Islam.

Whatever the reasons why Pomaks adopted Muhammad 's religion, the result was the appearance of a group of people whom the Christians could not, and sometimes did not want to, understand or tolerate. For centuries, the conflict has smouldered, occasionally bursting into flame, as in the Bosnian War, hopefully the last outbreak of this kind.

 BULGARIA Pomaks
Number around 150,000
Where the Rhodope Mountains; Ruen Municipality; northeastern Bulgaria

The Ottomans cut off Balkandzi Yovo's arms and legs and blinded him, but he did not give his sister, "beautiful Yana, to the Turkish faith." His torturers took her away only when he was unable to resist them any longer.

Bulgarian students study the folk song "Balkandzi Yovo" in school and, when writing essays, usually repeat what textbooks say, namely that it shows the "strength of the Bulgarian spirit under the enslaver's yoke." In fact, the song corroborates another stereotype – that the Bulgarians adopted Islam only under duress.

This is only one of the stereotypes that shape the lives of Bulgarian Pomaks. Most Christians, especially those who know Pomaks personally, consider them good and hardworking people. But this does not stop them from believing rumours about emissaries from Saudi Arabia spreading radical Islam among the Pomaks, for example.

In September 2008, a Eurobarometer survey showed that 70 percent of Bulgarians think that international terrorism is the greatest threat to their country. In March, an announcement made by MP Yane Yanev revealed how far this belief has gone. His statement that there were disseminators of fundamentalist ideas among the Pomaks in the village of Ribnovo (read more about them in Vagabond No.26) caused mass hysteria.

The State Agency for National Security, or DANS, investigated the report and discovered nothing suspicious, but the incident proved that Bulgaria has a closet full of dormant conflicts.

Patriotically-minded historians love to dwell on the killing of between 1,750 and 5,000 Bulgarians (estimates vary) in Batak during the suppression of the April Uprising of 1876. However, the massacre was not committed by the Ottoman army but by loosely organised paramilitary groups from the nearby Pomak villages. In other words, ethnic Bulgar killed ethnic Bulgar.

Two years later, the Bulgarians got their independence–and the conflict with the Pomaks intensified. Unwilling to recognise the authority of the governor of the autonomous province of Eastern Rumelia and helped by S. G. B. St. Clair, a British officer of Polish descent, the Pomaks from the area of Kirdzhali rebelled. Their Republic of Tamrash survived until 1886, when it was ceded to the Ottoman Empire.

This act inspired others to follow. The Republic of Gumuljina was established in 1913 as a reaction to the annexation of Aegean Thrace by Bulgaria in the Balkan Wars. There were armed bands of Pomaks in the Rhodope Mountains from 1942 until 1945, fighting for independence from Bulgaria.

The Bulgarian authorities were not inactive either. Each uprising was followed by the forced resettlement of the rebels. One of the largest of these happened at the end of the 1940s. As a result of the activities of Pomak fighters in the Rhodope, several communities were deported to northeastern Bulgaria.

In 1881, 1912–1913 and 1942, three large scale campaigns were conducted to make Pomaks do the opposite of what their predecessors had done: they were forced to convert to Christianity. The Communists brought in a change of tactics. They began changing Pomak names for Bulgarian ones. Their policy reached its culmination with the so-called Revival Process, but it actually started in 1956, when it was decided that Pomaks "had to realise their Bulgarian nationality."

Pomaks responded with self-isolation and the creation of their own legends about the hardships they had suffered. In 2000, a man from a Pomak hamlet in the Rhodope recounted that during the Revival Process dozens of men who did not want to change their names were taken away and executed. No historian has documented such a case.

The description of the heroes, who walked in a single file, "wearing white shirts, their forelocks waving in the air," literally repeats the haydutin's final wish in the folk song before he is hanged by the Turks.

 GREECE Πομάκοι
Number 140,000
Where Aegean Thrace

When in 1921 in Lausanne a group of diplomats agreed on an exchange of the Greeks in Turkey for the Turks in Greece, the treaty had some notable exemptions and curious consequences. The Greeks in Istanbul and several nearby towns and the Muslims in Aegean Thrace were allowed to stay in their native lands. Paradoxically, the Greek Muslims living in the Peloponnese, Epirus and Crete had to leave.

Greece ended up with a considerable Muslim minority, amounting to about 140,000 people at present, concentrated in a relatively small area.

However, the state turned a blind eye to the diversity existing within this group, which comprised both Pomaks, who spoke Bulgarian, and Turks.

Muslim schools taught only the Turkish language and, until the democratisation that started in 1974, after the Colonels were overthrown, Pomaks were regarded as Turks.

In addition, in the first years after the Second World War, the authorities suspected that the Pomaks in the Thrace Region were a fifth column of Communist Bulgaria. For this reason, educational institutions did their best to convince the Pomaks that they were really Turks.

The results are still visible. Go to Xanthi or any of the villages in the area and you will see women wearing headscarves who speak reasonable Bulgarian, as well as Turkish, Greek and a little Arabic. If you ask them about their ethnicity, they will say they are Turkish. The hotchpotch of Pomak identity received new ingredients in the mid-1990s.

One of them was the theory about the Thracian origin of Pomaks in Greece. It claims that they were an ancient tribe which had been consecutively Hellenised, Romanised, Christianised, Slavicised and Islamised over the past 2,500 years. Another theory defined Pomaks as a separate ethnic group with its own language.

Its followers even compiled their own grammars and dictionaries. Their publications provoked a furious reaction in Bulgaria and various public figures accused Greece of attempting to separate its ethnic Bulgarian population from their roots in a process of assimilation.

Ironically, the only Greek Muslims still living in Greece are to be found on the Dodecanese – in Rhodes and Kos. They avoided the population exchange because, when the Lausanne treaty was signed, the islands belonged to Italy.

TURKEY Pomaklar
Number between 300.000- 1 milion.
Where the area of Edirne and Lüleburgaz; Istanbul; Çanakkale; Izmir; Bursa...

Meeting 74-year-old Aişe Karapınar, who has been squatting in a poor, though clean shack in the yard of the abandoned synagogue in Edirne for eight years, is a disturbing experience. The shock does not come from the pure Bulgarian in which the old woman greets us with Dobre doshli!

This town is close to the border and home to a number of Turkish immigrants, who chose to leave Communist Bulgaria to avoid being forced to change their names for Slavic ones. Aişe is shocking because she says: "I am a Pomak. I was born in Drama. We moved to Turkey when I was little."

The flow of Pomaks from Drama, Komotini and the region of Nevrokopi began long before Aişe was born. The reason was the ill-treatment and violence against Pomaks by the Bulgarian army, which conquered these areas in the Great War.

The statement made by MP Mehmed Dzelal Abedin in the Bulgarian Parliament on 12 December 1917 painted a rather unpleasant picture of rapes and villagers forced to labour unpaid on government projects.

This was not the first Pomak migration from Bulgarian lands. Unhappy with Bulgaria's independence and fearing repression, Pomaks began moving to the Ottoman Empire as early as 1878–1912.

 BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA Bosniaks
Number 2,185,000 in Bosnia and Herzegovina; between 2.4 and 4.4 million worldwide
Where Bosnia and Herzegovina; Sanjak Region of Serbia and Montenegro; Croatia; Kosovo; the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia

When, at the end of the 16th Century, the Ottoman invaders flooded into their country, they made the Bosnians an offer they could hardly refuse. In exchange for their independence, the Ottomans promised that the Bosnians would retain their property, social status and the freedom to practise their religion.

The last promise was very important. Three hundred years earlier, the Bosnians had turned to Bogomilism and even made this heresy their official religion. This act elicited the wrath of both the Pope and the Patriarch in Constantinople and culminated in brutal Catholic persecutions. The Ottoman offer came as a godsend and, according to Dame Rebecca West, was a turning point in the consolidation of the sultan's power in the Balkans.

This event gave rise to something else too: the Bosniaks. Bogomil's followers gradually converted to Islam, thus becoming a unique form of Pomaks. Isolated in their out-of-the-way lands, the Muslim Slavs were almost autonomous and had their own authorities.

In the 19th Century, Istanbul's tentative reforms aimed at granting equal rights to all the sultan's subjects, and the occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1878, gave the Bosniaks good reason to fear they would lose their privileged status. This fear crystallised their self-awareness as a people who speak the language of the Serbs (Orthodox Slavs) and the Croats (Catholic Slavs), but are different from them.

The tension among the three groups had existed since the first years of Ottoman rule, when Bosniaks were at the top of the social pyramid, and continued during the Austro-Hungarian occupation. A Yugoslav citizen told Dame Rebecca West in 1937: "The Austro-Hungarians raised up the Muslims, who were a third of the population, to be their allies against the Christians and the Jews."

In the very first years after they became part of Yugoslavia, Bosniaks realised that times had changed irrevocably. Bosnia was divided administratively among several other regions. The fact that there had been Bosniaks fighting in Tito's guerrilla bands during the Second World War – although others collaborated with the SS – was not much help to their group in Socialist Yugoslavia.

It was only in the 1960s that Bosniaks were given the right to use the adjective "Muslim" to define their national identity.

They were already the largest ethnic group in the area when they declared their intention of splitting from Yugoslavia and forming an independent and multi-ethnic Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992, giving rise to a bloody war.

It took the lives of nearly 100,000 people and the killings and expulsions perpetrated by Serbs and Croats in ethnically mixed areas led to the appearance of a new term: "ethnic cleansing."

Bosniaks paid a high price for their exclusivity among the other Muslim Slavs in the Balkans. Those in Bosnia and Herzegovina live on the edge of the delicate balance between the two federal entities comprising the country: the Bosniak-Croat Federation and Republika Srpska.

Wind Gap.

Mnogo interesno..-Important.
             About the Pomak Nation
There is a large minority nation in the Balkans which is mostly overlooked and neglected, even if they used to have an independent and recognized state of their own not so long ago.

Minahan doesn't count them at all among many nations of One Europe. They number @ 500 000 - (150 000-200 in Bulgaria, 35 000 in Greece, some in Macedonia, and a large diaspora in Turkey -@ 300 000), speak dialects of Bulgarian and Turkish and maintain a strong and distinct identity.

Their homeland is in the Rhodope Mountains.
Bulgarians and Greeks consider them mostly converted to Islam Slavs.
The Turks, on the other hand, like to believe they are descendants of ancient Cumans who accepted Islam from the early Muslim missionaries.

When the Bulgarian Principality was created in the aftermath of the Russo-Turkish war, the Congress of Berlin 1878 established, at British insistence, an autonomous, but largely independent province of Eastern Rumelia with the Christian governor who was, nominally only, appointed by the Ottoman Sultan.
The Pomaks rebelled against the Bulgarian-dominated Eastern Rumelia and established, with the British help, an independent Pomak Republic of Tamrash which lasted until the military coup brought Eastern Rumelia into the Bulgarian State in 1886.
The territory of the Republic was then reincorporated into the Ottoman Empire.
The Tamrash Pomak Republic used the flag of three horizontal bands of red-green-black

Pomaks emigrants in USA are parts from Pomaks history..!

Emigration of Muslims from Bulgaria to the Bulgarian villages in North Western Anatolia. The case of Kocapınar and Necipköy villages

  Stoyan Shivarov (stoyan.shivarov (at) ottomanist.info)

Oriental Collections, Bulgarian National Library.

               Introduction
Migrations of Muslims from present-day Bulgaria towards the lands still in possession of Ottoman Empire started during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-1878. It did not cease after that peace treaty, but nevertheless the newly emerged Principality of Bulgaria managed to offer some security to all its subjects and the vast majority of Muslims choose to stay in their homeland. Followed years of relative peaceful, albeit at times quite tense, coexistence between the two states, which even the declaration of Bulgarian independence in 1908, did not destroy. Then with the Balkan wars of 1912-13 and the sharp increase of animosity towards minorities in both countries, many were again forced to migrate, fearing their own security. As a result the Christian Bulgarian population in Ottoman state virtually ceased to exist and in Bulgaria, especially in the newly conquered territories, many Muslim settlements were partially or completely abandoned and erased from the map.

In both countries the hostility towards the internal enemies was based mostly on confessional criteria and not that much on ethnicity. Here I will try to compare the historical fate and the consequent migrations of two communities, completely isolated and marginalized not only by the majority, but even by their coreligionists. These are the Pomaks of the Rhodope Mountains and the Bulgarians in the villages in North Western Anatolia1. The only significant contact these communities had with each other was during a short cohabitation in the several of the Bulgarian village in North Western Anatolia. Though drawing information from various sources, this paper is mainly based on the data collected during two consecutive field research expeditions in villages of North Western Anatolia, conducted in 2009 and 2010.2

                    The Bulgarians in Anatolia
Bulgarians have always been an important ethnic component in the Ottoman Empire. Even after the creation of the modern Bulgarian state they continued to be so in Thrace and Macedonia regions. There were migrations to this new Balkan state after 1878, but the majority chose not to alter their place of residence and instead hoped that these regions will soon be united. While Bulgarians in Thrace and Macedonia had never lost contact with their compatriots the so called Anatolian Bulgarians were completely cut off from their original community. As their numbers were not great they were (and still are) also out of the interest of researchers, publications about their historical faith or ethnographic features are scarce at best and are based almost entirely on secondary sources that offer only the Bulgarian perspective. Bulgarian historiography mentions around 20 predominantly Bulgarian settlements, but till the research expedition in 2009, with few exceptions, their exact location and / or current names were unknown. Curiously enough easily accessible early 20th century cartographic data has never been utilized.3 Though there is still some doubt about a couple of minor and somewhat temporary (çiftlik) settlements and about villages considered to be Bulgarian, but apparently became Graecized at some point, we were able to produce an accurate map of the Bulgarian settlements in North Western Anatolia.

Slavic speaking Christian Bulgarians in Anatolia were not from the autochthonous inhabitants of the region. There are no primary sources that could answer how and when exactly they crossed the Straits and founded their settlements. The earliest veritable document that could give us some data on this topic is a plea to the governor of the Bulgarian port city of Varna from 1879.4 Three representatives from the villages of Bayramiç, Paun köy (Şevketiye)5 and Koca bunar (Kocapınar) are explaining that while they do not know when exactly their ancestors had settled in Asia Minor most probably this happened “100-120 years ago” seeking shelter from both constant harassment and overtaxation of Ottoman authorities and attacks by bandits. They state that are representing more than 1000 families from 12 “completely Bulgarian” villages, with their inhabitants originally from Thrace, though do not mention any particular villages. Currently they experience difficulties and constant harassment, mainly from Circassians6, and are requesting help from the authorities of the Principality of Bulgaria for them to evacuate. Interesting fact is that all three representatives were illiterate, although they mention that there are Greek schools in most of their villages.7 Bulgarian government did not pay that much attention to this plea and full scale migration did not happen.

The only information for the history of the Bulgarians settlements in North Western Anatolia prior 1878 is from foreign travellers that were keeping logs during their journeys. Except for Kızderbent (in Kocaeli province) the rest of Bulgarian settlements were outside the main roads and did not attract any attention. The first published information about the presence of Bulgarians in this part of Ottoman Empire was an account of an Italian Salvatori, who in 1808 en route to Persia, stopped for a few hours in Kızderbent.8 Other travellers like Tancoigne, Leake, Keppel, Vronchenko (Вронченко) also gave short, sometimes contradictory, accounts on Kızderbent and its inhabitants. Although this was the first Bulgarian village discovered by the end of the 19th century it was completely Graecized and there are no records of migrations to Bulgaria. Still dwellers of Kızderbent retained the Slavic character of their speech, heavily influenced by both Turkish and Greek. Not that much affected by the Balkan wars they stayed on Anatolian soil till 1921. In Greece they are known as Trakatroukide.9
As an exception we could point out the villages of Çataltepe, Urumçe (Nusretiye), Çeltik and Stengel köy (Iskenderköy) in Çanakkale province, where the data are credible. These had been settled by Bulgarians from Ivaylovgrad (Ortaköy) region around 1850. Iskenderköy even later around 1875 with people from Kostur (Kesriye). The reason for these migrations was the search for more income and less tax burden.10

                         The Pomaks
Slavic speaking Muslims known as Pomaks are object of much more historical and general scientific interest. Even after the population exchanges and several migration campaigns (both voluntary and forced) this community is still strong in numbers and manages to defy assimilation, especially in present day Bulgaria and Greece. While scientist and media from the Balkan states continue to dig into the history and ethnography of the Pomaks their efforts are far from complete and because of various purely conjuncture reasons, sometimes quite far from reality. Scholars tend to neglect publications or even sources from outside their home countries, thus failing to notice the connection and often continuity among different Pomak settlements that are separated by state borders and sometimes vast distances. A popular notion among the scientific community in Bulgaria is that Pomaks that emigrated to Anatolian provinces of Turkey during and after the Balkan wars completely lost their cultural heritage and are assimilated into the Turkish society. Our two field study trips proved this not true. While Pomaks in Anatolia integrated into the Turkish society without much trouble there are still many villages that keep their distinct culture and have vivid interest about their Balkan roots. Unfortunately few sources are available to them and in many cases they are unaware of their exact place of origin and instead could only state a region like Selanik or Nevrokop. On the other hand while migration towards and from eastern Thrace are more or less documented in various works in Bulgarian, the colourful region of the former vilayet of Hüdavendigar that probably accepted much more and diverse fugitives is virtually unknown.

It would not be inaccurate to state that for the Bulgaria the 1912 Balkan war started in the Pomak village of Tımrış, centre of the Pomak resistance, when the artillery began shelling the settlement. For years this and several surrounding Pomak populated places had achieved effectively autonomous status and their inhabitants were processing enough firearms to oppose policing attempts.

The example of Kocapınar and Necipköy
I have chosen these two villages, not only because they are an example of Christian - Muslim population exchanges, caused by the Balkan wars. Muslim Pomaks and Christian Bulgarians in Asia Minor are unique communities that were considered inferior even by their coreligionists. In both populated places Pomak refugees arrived while most of the original Bulgarian population was still residing there. Never before or after these two groups had such prolonged contact. The contact - conflict situation is even more interesting considering the completely intelligible language of the two groups.

:Kocapınar was the most populous and wealthy of the Bulgarian villages and it was acting as their capital. It continues to be centre for Pomaks from the region to this day and the annual holiday of the village attracts huge crowds. Even though Kocapınar, like most other uphill villages in the region, suffers from depopulation, the former prosperity is still visible. Old houses are almost exclusively made of stone and are more spacious, compared to those in neighbouring settlements. The old Bulgarian school in the village is the largest building I have seen in any of the Bulgarian villages in North Western Anatolia.
According to Tacettin Akkuş around the middle of 19th century there were 80 Greek families and Bulgarians later replaced them.11 This contradicts data recorded from the descendants of the Bulgarians12 and also Ottoman sources from the same period, where many male members of the 83 recorded families have Bulgarian names like 'Stoyan'.13 Akkuş gives 1470 as official number for population of the village in 1905. In 1914 the fugitives that managed to reach Bulgarian soil count to 1028.14

Obviously the local Bulgarians considered emigration to their ancestral homeland, but as in the newly founded Bulgaria, in the North Western Anatolia things reverted to some level of normality and most of the families decided not to leave their property and settle into unknown for them country. The inability of the Bulgarian government to provide assistance also proved decisive. According to several narratives for quite some time Bulgarians were mostly pleased by the efforts of the Ottoman governors to prosecute the Circassian bands. The Young Turks revolution of 1908 was well received by the Anatolian Bulgarians and they started going out of their isolation and began much more active communication with the administrative centres. During this time they did not even resist being drafted in the Ottoman army. Later on we have accounts of Bulgarians from Anatolian villages being drafted and soon after deserting to the Bulgarian forces in Çatalca.15 Mihail Pavlov Chervenkov from Alacabayır (kaza of Balya) reported to Bulgarian authorities after deserting that there were around 40 Anatolian Bulgarians drafted and all of them are eager to switch sides. There were cases of desertation even before the war, as being located in Thrace gave easier opportunity to do so.16 One of the Anatolian Bulgarian deserters escaped from his garrison in Albania and through Serbian controlled areas arrived in Western Bulgaria. Other escaped from Istanbul on a Russian ship to Odessa.

All this precarious equilibrium was shaken by the start of the two consecutive Balkan wars that shaped anew not only the Balkan Peninsula but also Anatolia. As the military actions were on the Balkans Pomaks were affected both by direct force (mainly by paramilitary formation) and pressure to change their faith. Later was considered as way to erase the reason for them not being “pure Bulgarians”. Also, Pomaks from the Rhodope region have long history of animosity and at times open hostility with their Christian neighbours, most important one dating back to the “Massacre of Batak” which has never been forgotten nor forgiven. Even to this day Batak events are an important topic for the Bulgarian society, affecting mainly the general attitude toward Turkish minority17, and puts strain on the relations in Rhodopes. Recent (May 2011) canonisation by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church of the Batak victims added further to the already existing tension, created by the far right nationalistic sentiments.

Although the regular Bulgarian army never fully participated in skirmishes within Rhodopes, the paramilitary groups (mainly VMORO) were supplied, trained and supervised by officers on active duty. The villages were quickly overwhelmed and the ones most fiercely defying Bulgarian forces were treated harsh and in some cases - as with the centre of resistance Tımrış - completely demolished.18 They suffered the most and together with dwellers from neighbouring settlements like Çereºovo, Mihalkovo, Beden, Çuren, Breze, Petvar etc. were forced flew to the areas, still in Ottoman possession. A bit later Pomak population from the area of larger Nevrokop and Drama also started to flee. People from Barutin, Kribul, Koçan, Jijevo, Fırgovo, Ablanica, Kara Bulak (Borino), Babyak, Çirnovitsa, Pepelaj. They were not the first fugitives to reach Kocapýnar though as several Albanian families arrived shortly before them.

But the Bulgarians were still there. So it was the beginning of a tense cohabitation with Pomaks and Albanians. All the oral accounts from Bulgarian refugees, as well as our talks with their children and grandchildren tell the story of increasing tension and hostility towards Bulgarians while official authorities were looking neutral at best on the harassment done by Pomaks. It was not unusual for regular army units to stop in the village and search males for firearms. Their pleas to the governor for help were not taken in consideration as obviously they were already considered not trustworthy (probably it was known that drafted Bulgarians are defecting easily) and thus undesirable population.
Still considering mutual distrust between Bulgarians and Pomaks there is no reported open violence amid the two communities. Apart from petty harassments which should have persuaded Bulgarians to leave and their property to be sized from the still homeless Pomaks.
There were also constant pleas to the Bulgarian consulate in Istanbul for organizing full evacuation which was made in April-may 1914, with ships departing from the port of Bandýrma. Most of these refugees settled in Dedeaðaç and Gümülcine, thus just after several years they were again forced to migrate, because of Bulgaria's defeat in the World war. Though people from Kocapýnar did not exchange their villages with the Pomak refugees from Rhodopes, some settled in abandoned by Turks settlements like Malki Voden (Subüklün).
Currently Kocapınar is also the village with most intense communication with Bulgaria19. Even during 1970 and 1980s there were cases of Bulgarians born there to visit the village. Our best informer Hüseyin Esener (Terzi Hüseyin) also visited Koçan in present day Bulgaria where his ancestors were born. On the annual village holiday in 2009 for example there were representatives of the Bulgarian Mufti. And after dissemination of results from our research the Bulgarian consul in Bursa did visit Kocapınar (February 2010).

                  Necipköy
Situated only several kilometres away from Kocapnar. According to the Bulgarian consulate, just before the evacuation in 1914, there were 80 houses with around 400 inhabitants. There were also a church and a Greek school.
Whole village evacuated in May 1914, again via the port of Bandırma to Thrace and again just several years later they were driven out by the Greek army. Most of them settled in Burgas region, where their descendants reside to this day. This is one of the Bulgarian villages that actually suffered human losses during the migration. Several dwellers together with the muhtar of the village were robbed and killed on the way to Bandırma.20 Again the Circassian bands were responsible.

During our field research in 2009 we uncovered data that is not present in other sources. Treasure hunting is widespread in the whole region, both because there are many ruins from Byzantine and even earlier times, but also because in almost every former Bulgarian village there is a legend of a rich inhabitant that hid possessions somewhere. That is the reason many of the houses to be consciously demolished, looking for possible coins in the walls. In Nacipköy the legend is about the wealthy cleric named Manol (Papaz Manol) - his house is still inhabited. We found the most extreme case of treasure hunting to be here. Apart from the various excavations around the village an even more striking example was inside the old mosque. Somebody dig a hole in the middle of the old mosque, which was closed down in 2006. The mosque had been built over the foundation of the Bulgarian church. Nobody could give us satisfactionary explanation why a new mosque has been erected as the village population actually shrank during last decades.

Pomaks in Necipköy are mostly refugees from Çereşovo (almost the whole village settled here), but also families from Tımrış and Osikovo that fled in the beginning of the Balkan war. They managed to reach the Anatolian shore through the port of Kavala. We do not have exact numbers, but according to the Bulgarian general census from 1920 there were only three Pomaks21 in Çereşovo, while before it was predominantly Pomak village22.

In Necipköy Pomaks and Bulgarians spent more than year in cohabitation. In contrast with Kocapınar here we do not have many details on this period. Things get more complicated when we do not have any mentioning about such close existence in the recorded memories of the returned Anatolian Bulgarians. While completely sure that such thing happened we could conclude that there were no major accidents for them to remain in the memory of the refugees.

                            Conclusion
To this moment almost all research on the migrations caused by the Balkan wars has been based on archival sources or government statistical data. Accounts of the witnesses and victims of the events were used mostly for propaganda purposes and are without doubt exaggerated. Surprisingly a whole century after the events there is still much fieldwork to be done23, as sometimes there are many contradictions among the archival sources from different countries or simply they are vastly inaccurate. Especially such isolated and largely illiterate groups like Anatolian Bulgarians and Pomaks are in the periphery of both governmental politics and registration efforts as they are only a fraction of much larger confessional communities - Christians in Asia Minor and Balkan Muslims.24 While Pomaks are undergoing a process of increasing interest towards their past Anatolian Bulgarians, because of their small numbers, are in danger of being completely forgotten and being mentioned only as Christians or as a part of the former Greek population in Asia Minor. It is not uncommon even for the second generation refugees not have even a slightest clue about the exact location of the villages of their parents as they know its name only in unofficial dialect form or it was renamed by Bulgarian or Turkish authorities. The only viable solution for such shortcomings is an extensive research based both on primary archival sources, governmental statistics, narratives and field research. Omitting just one of these leads to a long chain of inaccurate interpretations, which, especially regarding the Balkans should be strictly avoided as they are often used to deepen the religious and ethnic separations.

It's 40 years since the violent crackdown on a remarkable protest in two remote Muslim villages of Communist Bulgaria. In the winter of 1973 their entire populations rebelled against the state and spent months camped out in the main square. Uniquely for Communist Eastern Europe, their villages became a no-go area for the authorities. We talked to those who remember and who experienced it first hand.

Greetings from the management and staff of the site www.pomak.eu (http://www.pomak.eu/) on the  of  sacred Holiday Kurban Bayram 2015.

Dear Muslim brothers and sisters!
Dear, visitors to the site.

Shortly days ago one of the most famous journalists Mirolyuba Benatova was in the US in five states to make a film about our compatriots in America! This week begain airing a new TV . I contacted her , there will be a second part because of the huge interest!

ArticleId=5080467 (http://www.24chasa.bg/Article.asp?ArticleId=5080467)
